Saving Private Ryan - (VHS) Falling squarely into the “serious” side of Steven Spielberg’s schizophrenic career Saving Private Ryan begins with one of the most shockingly visceral depictions of battle ever filmed. The viewer is placed into the heart of the Allied landings on Omaha beach. Surrounded by gunfire gore and general chaos the first twenty minutes of the film are quite simply some of the most astonishing footage to have come out of Hollywood for decades. What follows is a more conventional plot in which an infantry squadron headed by Tom Hanks are sent on a mercy mission to retrieve a single man from behind enemy lines. However Private Ryan is not a spy or a valuable scientist or high ranking soldier – he is simply the last of his brothers alive and under direct orders from Washington he is to be brought home so that his family is spared any further grief. Although this seems like a slightly far-fetched premise it is grounded in factual events. While the film never recreates the sheer intensity of the opening scenes it is non the less a powerful and moving film only occasionally slipping into Spielberg’s trademark sentimentality. The performances from supporting cast Tom Sizemore Edward Burns and Matt Damon are excellent and Tom Hanks is fine in the lead.
