W.H Smith: Shopping Online at W.H Smith UK Has Never Been So Easy - SOUTH PARK-THE MOVIE. (DVD) Gloriously offensive and surprisingly successful big screen spin-off of the animated television series. Stan Kyle Kenny and Cartman have their fragile little minds warped by the new Terrance & Phillip movie and end up provoking their mothers into declaring war on Canada. A musical of sorts South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut is a foul mouthed masterpiece of cardboard cut-out satire – and very very funny as well. It would be easy to chastise the big screen debut of Matt Parker and Trey Stone’s foul mouthed juniors for its never-ending foul language explicit sexual references and gratuitous violence but you get the feeling that Parker and Stone would be delighted by any criticisms along these lines as the film prompts them all. A film that challenges censorship at the same time as satirising the subject seems like quite heavy material but anyone whose remotely familiar with the antics of Stan Kyle Cartman and Kenny will know exactly what to expect. The plot sees the four unruly youths bluff their way into the local cinema to see the new Terrance & Philip movie. They emerge hours later with a whole new vocabulary that delights their friends shocks their peers and provokes their mothers to invade Canada. As you do. Little do they realise that an ancient prophesy claims that should Canadian blood be spilt on the soil of South Park Satan will rise (along with new minion and – uh – lover Sadam Hussein) and take over the world. If this all sounds a little outlandish you obviously haven’t seen any of the original series. Between all of this of course Kenny gets killed (as you would expect) Stan vomits on his true love Wendy and Kyle kicks his baby brother. In addition to all these usual jokes there are a number of songs which effectively let the film qualify as a musical. As well as an extended multilingual version of “Kyle’s Mum’s A Bitch” there are pitch-perfect pastiches on the whole gamut of sickly Disney songs. From the heroes-motivational-number (in this case sung by Satan) to the unrequited-love-ballad (cut short by a vomiting scene) to the Oscar Nominated epic sweep of “Blame Canada” it is entirely possible that South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut is one of the best musicals to have come out of Hollywood for years. Sit back open your mind a little and laugh like a drain. ... HITCH-HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY - (DVD) Douglas Adams' classic sci-fi comedy finally makes it to DVD. Two discs containing all six episode plus life the universe and everything. Revisiting the BBC television series of The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy in the wake of Douglas Adams' death is a sobering experience. Painfully funny - as always - but almost tragically sad. Anything by Adams was always worth seeking out but the idea that he will not be producing any more is tantamount to tragedy - albeit in a somewhat selfish sense. Maudlin thoughts aside - and the program is meant to be enjoyed not mourned - the series stands up brilliantly well today. Certainly the special effects have aged somewhat but if anything that simply adds charm. The script and the cast are spot on - particularly Peter Jones as the voice of the book itself. Given the series genesis from radio series to the page to the television screen this was Adams' third attempt with the same material. The limitations of visualising everything notwithstanding the series works splendidly and considering that the feature film version still (at time of writing at least) hasn't surfaced this is the best representation of the series we're likely to get. While some claim that the Guide itself was the original form of the world wide web we all use today none can deny the effect that the series (and the books and radio series - all of which are essential) had on British culture. "Don't Panic" "42" "Dish of the Day" and the "Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster" have all either taken on new meanings or found themselves lodged in the nations subconscious. Characters such as Zaphod Beeblebrox Arthur Dent and Marvin the paranoid android are unforgettable creations while Adams' skewed reasoning behind the ultimate question of life the universe and everything makes curious sense. Douglas Adams will be sorely missed but his legacy is rich and glorious. Wallow in it and don't panic. WHSmith is the UK's number one family retailer selling a range of products that extends across education, entertainment and information. Each year WHSmith High Street stores sell enough pens to circle the earth; enough books to fill a library shelf from London to Edinburgh; and enough paper to write a letter to everyone in the world. WH Smith also sell 122 million magazines and newspapers each year - enough to make a pile 69 times taller than Mount Everest.
The first High Street store was a small news vendor opened in 1792 in Little Grosvenor Street, London, by Henry Walton Smith and his wife Anna. Today, WHSmith has 545 High Street stores, covering over 3 million square feet of selling space and employing 17,000 staff. Clubcard, the Company's loyalty scheme, has more than 5 million members.
Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery form the core of the High Street business. WHSmith sell more books than any other retailer in England, Scotland and Wales. For example, one in three copies of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire were bought from WHSmith in the first weekend of release. WHSmith promote new authors with their Fresh Talent showcase and also have the Thumping Good Read Award that is voted for by members of Clubcard.
WHSmith's major stores stock more than 45,000 product lines, whereas an average food supermarket carries around 10,000 lines.
WHSmith currently holds a strong market share in each of the core categories in which it trades - books, stationery, news, magazines and entertainment. WH Smith's strategy is to exploit the strength, power and potential of the WHSmith brand to provide the very best service and value for money for their customers, shareholders and wider community.
