A woman caught in a sterile marriage embarks on a passionate affair with a young novelist. Five years later she walks out of his life with no explanation leaving him bereft. Years later he meets her husband by chance and his obsession is rekindled. For the most part Neil Jordan's film of Graham Greene's novel is a faithful affair - the story of a love quadrangle surrounding Sarah Miles (Julianne Moore) a woman trapped in a sterile marriage with her civil servant husband Henry (Steven Rea). Told in flashback Henry asks his friend the writer Maurice Bendrix (Ralph Fiennes) to find out who Sarah is conducting an affair with. Henry however is unaware that two years earlier Sarah abruptly broke off a five year old affair with Maurice for no apparent reason. Once the mystery of the End Of The Affair is revealed however Jordan's film diverges subtlety but substantially from the novel. Grounded more firmly in a tale of human frailty than Greene's Catholic guilt soaked fable Jordan's End of the Affair is non-the-less intriguing and beautifully filmed. Acting is fine too particularly from Julianne Moore and Ian Hart (as the private detective assigned to the case). Overall a classy intelligent romantic drama.
