WH Smith UK: The Leading UK Book Store - Online! Books, Stationery, Music, Video and More... - Bodyguard - (VHS) After recieving death-threats a singer hires a new bodyguard to protect her from a stalker. Romance blossoms between the two. Kevin Coster and Whitney Huston star. ... Pearl Harbor (Ben Affleck) (DVD) Romantic triangle set against the backdrop of the Pearl Harbor bombings. Ben Affleck Kate Beckinsale and Josh Hartnet provide a good-looking central trio while Armageddon director Michael Bay makes the explosions look almost as pretty. Following the Titanic formula to the letter Michael Bay's action thriller take on one of the most notorious incidents in American history is long pretty and wrapped around a romantic triangle. Criticised in some quarters for trivialising historical events the film could certainly benefit from some grit beneath its gloss. However viewed purely as an entertainment it delivers impressively well. The actual bombing of Pearl Harbor is used as the film's centrepiece a long - almost real time - recreation of the events. Here the film is at its very best. The special effects are astonishing and the focus broadens to encompass reactions on all sides. Unfortunately this is preceded by a rather lumpen romance diverting the attention to a fairly conventional love triangle between Jock-like Ben Affleck jock-like Josh Hartnett and English-rose-hiding-behind-an-accent Kate Beckinsale. This all looks very nice there's lots of slow motion expressive lighting and shots which make the three leads look very attractive but the dialogue is often hilariously bad which undercuts much of the emotional tension. After the bombing raid the film continues to show the American retaliation bombing. However this too seems ill-advised feeling - although based on genuine events - like an attempt at a happy ending of all things. However ultimately the film delivers exactly what you would expect from the director of Armageddon. Unsubtle heart tugging big bangs and pretty visuals. It works on its own level but don't make the mistake of taking it as seriously as the events on which it is based deserve. THIRTEEN DAYS - (VHS) For hirteen extraordinary days in October of 1962 the world stood on the brink of an unthinkable catastrophe. Across the globe people anxiously awaited the outcome of a harrowing political diplomatic and military contfrontation that threatened to end in an apocalyptic nuclear exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union. In Thirteen Days the power and peril of American presidency is dramatically explored by director Roger Donaldson who captures the urgency suspense and paralyzing chaos of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The alarming escalation of events during those fateful days really brought President John F Kennedy and his brother Bobby to the fore and it's through the eyes of a trusted Presidential aide and condfidante Kenneth P O'Donnell (Kevin Cosner) that the story unfolds... ... WHSmith (WHS) is one of the UK's leading retail groups incorporating market leading companies in retail, publishing and news distribution. The Group has 1,464 stores world-wide, 30,747 employees in 12 countries and sales of some £2.9bn.

WHSmith - At a Glance

WHSmith is the UK's number one family retailer selling a range of products that extends across education, entertainment and information. Each year WHSmith High Street stores sell enough pens to circle the earth; enough books to fill a library shelf from London to Edinburgh; and enough paper to write a letter to everyone in the world. WH Smith also sell 122 million magazines and newspapers each year - enough to make a pile 69 times taller than Mount Everest.

The first High Street store was a small news vendor opened in 1792 in Little Grosvenor Street, London, by Henry Walton Smith and his wife Anna. Today, WHSmith has 545 High Street stores, covering over 3 million square feet of selling space and employing 17,000 staff. Clubcard, the Company's loyalty scheme, has more than 5 million members.

Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery form the core of the High Street business. WHSmith sell more books than any other retailer in England, Scotland and Wales. For example, one in three copies of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire were bought from WHSmith in the first weekend of release. WHSmith promote new authors with their Fresh Talent showcase and also have the Thumping Good Read Award that is voted for by members of Clubcard.

WHSmith's major stores stock more than 45,000 product lines, whereas an average food supermarket carries around 10,000 lines.

WHSmith currently holds a strong market share in each of the core categories in which it trades - books, stationery, news, magazines and entertainment. WH Smith's strategy is to exploit the strength, power and potential of the WHSmith brand to provide the very best service and value for money for their customers, shareholders and wider community.
