Kiefer Sutherland stars as a counter-terrorist agent trying to prevent the assassination of a Presidential candidate but finding that he and his family are also targets. This is groundbreaking stuff - each episode representing one hour in one heck of a day in Jack Bauer's life. What's extraordinary is the way the drama has been strung out over the season to superb effect - the pacing is rarely off and the tension builds perfectly towards the end of the season. Sutherland is outstanding but he's just one part of a quality ensemble cast from David Harewood's inscrutable Senator Palmer Penny Johnson as his Lady Macbeth-esque wife to Leslie Hope and Elisa Cuthbert as Bauer's oft-kidnapped family and the CTU players - Sarah Clarke (Nina) Xander Berkeley (George) and Carlos Bernard (Tony). Some of the writing may be hokey and the accents a little awry but the nitpicks are far outweighed by the end result. The DVD extras are effectively limited to an intriguing alternate ending but the packaging and menus are impeccable and the real reason to buy is the series itself - one of the classiest pieces of television ever created. ...
