Blair Witch Project - (DVD) Phenomenally successful horror film. Although only made with little money and a couple of cam corders this is a genuinely creepy little film. Three young film makers venture into the woods surrounding the town of Burkitsville Maryland to make a documentary about the local scare-story the Blair Witch. They never return but three years later their footage is found and edited together for your scrutiny... Any film which get reviews proclaiming it to be the most frightening film since The Exorcist is bound to come in for some backlash and The Blair Witch Project is no exception. In fact the negative press that came out after the film's release was so violent it was farcical. The Blair Witch Project is a film not a challenge it is not a gauge to show how brave you are and while there are a couple of minor glitches with in it's suspension of disbelief (how many horror films don't?) it is still an extraordinary achievement which should be applauded. Armed with an intriguing premise in which the viewer is invited to view the last known footage filmed by a trio of film students as they progress towards their inevitable disappearance (and demise?) the film piques the morbid curiosity of it's audience. That all of the footage was filmed by the actors themselves with no film crew on hand gives the proceedings an air of authenticity. The camera jerks all over the place and the sound quality is never fantastic. However the performances from the three leads (Heather Donahue Michael Williams and Joshua Leonard) are all faultless their clowning around will be convincing to anyone who has ever been backpacking and while it is entirely true that Heather's character is pretty irritating (she being the one who apparently instigated the filming in the first place) but then she's supposed to be and most of the questions revolving around why they kept filming in extreme circumstances can be traced back to her character. As events conspire against them (the map goes AWOL the woods become a maze and things go bump in the night) the character's slowly begin to fall apart and the tension begins to mount. The master stroke here is that there are no special effects no CGI monsters and no dramatic score so that the chills - subtle at first and then increasingly visceral rely entirely on the imagination of the viewers taking full advantage of the very real fear of the dark or unknown. So while not the scariest film ever made The Blair Witch Project is an excellent idea executed (if you pardon the pun) to near perfection. Whether you love it or hate it it is impossible to deny that this will enter the horror hall of fame as one of the most innovative and best horror films of the nineties.
