EmpireStores Sicilian Sequel to 'The Godfather' this describes the ending of Michael Corleone's exile in Sicily his search for Salvatore Giuliano and his troubles as he confronts brutal and unfamiliar treacheries in the deceitful society within which he moves. ... SCARY MOVIE. (DVD) Spoof horror comedy taking swipes at the likes of the Scream trilogy The Matrix and The Blair Witch Project. Rude and violent the comedy is a bit hit and miss but when it hits it's very funny indeed. Keenen Ivory Wayans directs. Originally titled Scream If You Know What I Did Last Halloween (and at one point Last Summer I Screamed Because Halloween Fell On Friday the 13th) this free-for-all parody of the Hollywood teen horror movie eventually settled on the less cumbersome (and less amusing) Scary Movie - itself the original title of Wes Craven's Scream. Adopting the scattershot approach of the likes of Airplane and Naked Gun and raising the gross-out stakes considerably Scary Movie - like all such breathless spoofs - doesn't always work with quite a few of the jokes falling flat or being over used. However when it is funny it is very funny indeed - gleefully tearing apart the teen horror movie clichĂ©s and mercilessly parodying scenes from the likes of I Know What You Did Last Summer The Blair Witch Project and Scream itself which confusingly was a parody itself. The cast includes the likes of Carmen Electra Shannon Elizabeth and Marlon and Shawn Wayans the list of writers (and producers) is almost as long as it's original title (the result of two spoofs in development being combined into one). Not frightening in any sense of course but funny and rude - which is what counts. The Bends Radiohead's second album The Bends is the critcally acclaimed follow up to Pablo Honey. Forceful with a grander and more polished sound than its predecessor The Bends spawned classic songs like Fake Plastic Trees and High and Dry. ... Patriot (Mel Gibson) (DVD) - (WS) Epic story set during the American War of Independence. Mel Gibson stars as a former pacifist provoked into battle by a psychotic English Colonel. Directed by Roland “Godzilla” Emmerich. An English nanny we can only assume dropped Mel Gibson on his head when he was an infant. Following Braveheart with another epic tale of Mad Mel battling cartoon English baddies who have been persecuting his family and raping and pillaging their way though his country. Of course historical accuracy has never made for entertaining movies and given that The Patriot is from the team behind Independence Day and Godzilla there’s no need really to take it seriously it’s a romp at best and a slick very enjoyable one. A good thing too considering the dubious notion of attributing Nazi atrocities to the English troops to get a stronger emotional response out of the audience. For the most part though the film seems content to work as a standard revenge drama with the war itself serving as a backdrop. Gibson is fine as the hero handling both the emotion stuff with his family and the axe-wielding battle scenes with equal aplomb. Fellow Aussie Heath Ledger is also fine as his son spurring his father into battle. Best of the lot though is Jason Isaac’s bug-eyed performance as the irredeemably evil Colonel – a display of such gloriously rabid psychosis that he goes straight to the top of the Hollywood English Bad Guys hall of fame (quite a crowded place). Beautifully made and surprisingly gripping this is an entertaining addition to the Hollywood history-as-boys-own-adventure cannon. Region 2 DVD Version Widescreen: 2.34:1 Anamorphic Stereo: Dolby Digital 5.1 (English) Special Features Trailer Director/Producer Commentary Three Featurettes: “The True Patriots” “Visual Effects” and “The Art of War” Conceptual art to film comparison. ...
