(DVD) An affectionate send up of a certain long running sci-fi series finds the actors of a now cancelled show being accidentally recruited by a bunch of winsome aliens to deal with an intergalactic tyrant. Tim Allen Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver have fun. A massively entertaining sci-fi send up targets Star Trek with an un-nervingly precise aim. Tim Allen leads a group of aging actors one mildly famous for a culty sci-fi saga and now living off the cult following that still worships it. However it transpires that their show is popular elsewhere too - specifically an alien race named the Thermians are big fans of what they perceive to be "historical documents" from earth. Under threat from a suitably nasty green-skinned bad-guy they employ the unwitting actors to take part in their own real life space adventure and - of course - find themselves hopelessly out of their depth. Although the film spares absolutely no opportunity to poke fun at the original Star Trek the humour is so good natured that the film should appeal to Trekies and non-Trekies alike. In fact most die-hard Star Trek fans will undoubtedly tell you that they got more jokes and references that non-Trek fans would. No matter this is excellent entertainment all round. The cast are excellent this is easily the best thing Tim Allen has done on film (or TV for that matter) he actually appears quite likable here. Sigourney Weaver is good too but the best of the lot is Alan Rickman playing a depressed Brit thespian stranded under some dodgy rubber make-up as the Spock-like alien crew member. The "real" aliens are good too - in human form they are disarmingly likeable and when the special effects kick in they look excellent enough to be vaguely plausible (in the context of the film at least.) The plot isn't exactly un-predictable but proves instead to be an exceptionally satisfying gut-bustingly funny and largely inoffensive (in a good way) adventure. ... Oliver - (DVD) A rousing film version Lionel Bart's musical adaption of Dicken's classic novel Oliver! Stars Ron Moody as Fagin and Mark Lester as the eponymous hero. The orphaned Oliver escapes London from a dreary workhouse and is taken in by a gang of young pickpockets who work for master thief Fagin while learning their trade...... ...
