In the not so distant future a class of school kids find themselves stranded on an island armed with assorted weapons and informed that only one of their number will be permitted to leave - the one survivor... So you thought the contestants on Survivor had it hard? Battle Royale takes the idea to it's logical extreme - a bunch of school kids stranded on a desert island and forced to turn on each other in order to survive. Lord of the Flies with higher stakes? Perhaps. Actually Kinji Fukasaku's stunningly realised tale of society on the crumble is a pin-sharp satire by turns funny and shocking. Characters behave as you would expect them too - some throw themselves at the violence with gusto others hide and team up but as the stakes rise petty jealousies and feuds from school become reasons for murder and even the most wide eyed innocent is likely to jam an axe in their best friends back. Although the majority of the cast are teens all are excellent and the whole film is given a touch of extra class with the presence of Takeshi Kitano as the psychotic overseer. It's not for the squeamish of course but it is very entertaining and rather ingenious. Recommended. ...
