Since Amy Heckering's Beverly Hills version of Jane Austin's Emma hit the screens as Clueless Hollywood studios have been falling over themselves to plunder classic literature and remake it in the dubious form of the "high-school comedy". Gil Junger's sparky 10 Things I Hate About You follows the trend to the letter this time taking The Taming Of The Shrew as its inspiration. While many of its predecessors (She's All That for example) have balked at admitting where their inspiration comes from for fear of loosing their intended audience 10 Things.. actively embraces its source right down to its title. The Taming of the Shrew doesn't seem like the first choice for a modern spin after all any play in which the fiercely independent heroine is broken down by a sadistic man who - in a happy ending - turns her into a subservient housewife sounds more like The Stepford Wives than a romantic comedy. However with a few judicious tweaks in the tale (not least of which is an ingenious translation to the nineties American schoolyard) proves that you can't keep a good story down - dubious ending or not. The script is witty dropping references to the play all over the place (all the characters and settings refer back to the original) and the plot works surprisingly well in it's new context. The young enthusiastic cast (mostly anonymous except for Third Rock From The Sun's Joseph Gordon Levitt) are excellent and the whole production reeks of class. ... Borrowers - (VHS) Starring: John Goodman Jim Broadbent Celia Imrie Since 1952 Mary Norton's Borrowers have been delighting adults and children alike. This 1998 British film is probably the best screen adaptation yet of these classic stories and I'm sure that Norton herself would have been delighted with the way that it brings her characters to life. Pod Homily and their children Peagreen and Arrietty are the Clocks a family of Borrowers - tiny 4" people who live under the floorboards of a big house and 'borrow' from the Lenders the 'human beans' who live upstairs. They are deeply suspicious of these apparently massive creatures and avoid contact with them at all costs. However when Arrietty is discovered by Pete the Lender's son and they tentatively becomes friends things begin to change. Pete explains that his Great Aunt whose house they all share has died and as no-one can find her will the house is to be demolished by the nasty local lawyer Potter. Although Pete has promised to smuggle the Clocks to their new house when they move the little people evolve a new plan - they must find the missing will . . . What follows is a fabulous mixture of hilarious slapstick and thrilling action sequences that would not be out of place in an Indiana Jones movie. Visually the film is astounding and huge credit must go to the design team who have so seamlessly blended together two worlds of such different scales. The detail present in scenes where the tiny Borrowers are surrounded by massive versions of everyday items is quite astounding. Brilliantly funny and exciting to the last The Borrowers is guaranteed not to disappoint. ...
