TOM'S MIDNIGHT GARDEN (1998) - (VHS) An adaptation of Philippa Pierce's classic children's novel. In 1950's England Tom goes to stay with his aunt and uncle. When their broken grandfather clock strikes thirteen their house transforms into the mansion it once was and an extraordinary garden appears... Willard Caroll's adaption of Philippa Pierce's Tom's Midnight Garden is the sort of children's film which will probably appeal more to adults with fond memories of the novel. Given that the original story was set in 1950 the film manages to be a sort of two-tier period drama with fifties Tom heading back in time to Victorian times suggestions of tinkering with the plot to make Tom more contemporary are probably gross heresy so shall be discussed no further here. A good cast struggle with a wordy screenplay and some of the scenes feel a little uneasy but the acting is good throughout - particularly the young leads who must carry the scenes. Production values are fine too and the film manages to capture some of the magic of the original novel. One for parents - indeed anyone with nostalgic hankerings over the book. Rope in the kids too though they'll no doubt be suckered in and maybe later you'll find them scouring the bookshelves... ...
