HOLE (DVD) - (WS) Unusually effective low-budget British horror film starring American Beauty's Thora Birch. ... DINOSAUR (DISNEY) - (DVD) Computer-animated Disney adventure. After his egg hatches in a strange environment a young dinosaur grows up in alien surroundings "adopted" by a family of lemurs. When a meteor shower strikes the earth he must join a group of other dinosaurs to travel to the comparative safety of the "nesting grounds". The opening scenes of Disney's Dinosaur demand the biggest television you can get your hands on (illegal activities not withstanding - of course). An utterly jaw-dropping sequence in which a dinosaur egg is stolen from a nest and through a series of events taken on an extraordinary journey rendered in glorious computer-generated images across a prehistoric landscape. It's a breath-taking example of purely visual storytelling. Unfortunately once the egg has landed and the (implausibly cute) dinosaur emerges the creatures around it open their mouths and talk and you suddenly realise you're watching a Disney movie. It's a shame but not a crippling one. This is closer to The Lion King than Walking With Dinosaurs or Jurassic Park the nice dinos are big-eyed and cute have all-American accents and are essentially heroic beasties who must band together to defeat the unscrupulous bad-guys and save the day (before becoming extinct - naturally). As far as the computer-generated dinosaurs (placed in actual locations) go this looks very nice indeed although its probably the only time in which Disney's thunder has been stolen by the BBC. Of course if you're looking for a Disney adventure that the family should enjoy you really can't go wrong with this. Although a touch more violent that one would usually expect from the House of Mouse (Dinosaurs tending to eat each other etc.) it retains the usual charms which distinguish most Disney output. Besides it's worth seeing for the opening sequence alone. DVD Version Widescreen: 1.85:1 Stereo: Dolby Digital 5.1 (English Hebrew Greek) Subtitles: English/English for the hard of hearing/Hebrew/Greek Special Features Created directly from the digital source 'Behind The Scenes' features plus production notes Interactive virtual reality game - Aladar's Adventures 'Dino-Search' game 'Dino-pedia' fact files Animated menus ... |
WHSmith (WHS) is one of the UK's leading retail groups incorporating market leading companies in retail, publishing and news distribution. The Group has 1,464 stores world-wide, 30,747 employees in 12 countries and sales of some £2.9bn.
WHSmith is the UK's number one family retailer selling a range of products that extends across education, entertainment and information. Each year WHSmith High Street stores sell enough pens to circle the earth; enough books to fill a library shelf from London to Edinburgh; and enough paper to write a letter to everyone in the world. WH Smith also sell 122 million magazines and newspapers each year - enough to make a pile 69 times taller than Mount Everest.
The first High Street store was a small news vendor opened in 1792 in Little Grosvenor Street, London, by Henry Walton Smith and his wife Anna. Today, WHSmith has 545 High Street stores, covering over 3 million square feet of selling space and employing 17,000 staff. Clubcard, the Company's loyalty scheme, has more than 5 million members.
Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery form the core of the High Street business. WHSmith sell more books than any other retailer in England, Scotland and Wales. For example, one in three copies of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire were bought from WHSmith in the first weekend of release. WHSmith promote new authors with their Fresh Talent showcase and also have the Thumping Good Read Award that is voted for by members of Clubcard.
WHSmith's major stores stock more than 45,000 product lines, whereas an average food supermarket carries around 10,000 lines.
WHSmith currently holds a strong market share in each of the core categories in which it trades - books, stationery, news, magazines and entertainment. WH Smith's strategy is to exploit the strength, power and potential of the WHSmith brand to provide the very best service and value for money for their customers, shareholders and wider community.
