The astronauts of Apollo 11 are about to walk on the moon and down below the residents of a sheep-farming Australian town are on the edge of their seats as the satellite dish outside of the town has been chosen to beam the live footage around the world. Everyone is depending on scientist Cliff Buxton (Sam Neill) who must overcome all of the mishaps and problems thrown at him to ensure the small community is put on the map. A gentle wonderfully entertaining comedy telling the true(ish?) story of the Parkes' satellite dish in New South Wales which was selected by NASA as the prime southern hemisphere tracking station during the Apollo 11 mission being responsible for relaying the television pictures of Armstrong landing on the moon. Unlike most dishes of it's size Parkes was (indeed still is) located in the middle of a sheep paddock and was run by a crew of three. The Dish takes the form of a character based comedy of the underdogs-coming-out-on-top variety. The three men working at the dish the upright Cliff (Sam Neil) the timid Glenn (Tom Long) and the brash Ross (Kevin Harrington) are likable but not - initially at least - exactly who you would expect to be responsible for such a huge task. They are joined by Al (Patrick Warburton) an American from NASA who views the eccentric group initially with bewilderment and later with fondness. Away from the dish itself the whole town of Parkes is on tenterhooks thrilled that they are about to be put on the map here the film opens out picking up on other characters such as the Mayor his wife his rebellious daughter and science nerd son along with the usual townful of likable oodballs and nutters. As the town makes its preparations for a visit from the Prime Minister a badly timed power-outage cases the crew at the dish to "loose" the shuttle and the panic begins to rise. Although there's not really anything ground breaking going on here The Dish hits every right note you could hope for. The characters are charming without being sentimental the humour is fresh and funny and the final scenes in which the moon landings are broadcast is surprisingly moving (yes they do get everything sorted out in the end but then you knew that anyway). The cast are uniformly excellent and the period detail is (I'm told) spot on. Best of all the film proves that you don't need to resort to tedious scatological humour to make a comedy this is superb without. Just don't mention the Lunar conspiracy theories...
