Rich Dad's Prophecy Just a few years from now the vast majority of 'baby boomers' will be on the verge of retirement - and looking to cash in on their retirement plans. THE GRINCH (DVD) Green mean and hairy the scrooge-like creature from Dr. Seuss' picture book comes to disconcerting life thanks to Jim Carrey and some exceptionally impressive makeup. Ron Howard directs this quintessential yuletide adventure while consulting the Tim Burton Book of Weird. Green and grumpy he may be The Grinch is so bitter and cynical he makes Shrek look like Marry Poppins. So it's a bit of a shame then that everything else in Ron Howard's version of Dr. Seuss' book is so grotesquely sweet. Set in Whoville a fairy tale town built inside - it seems - a snowflake The Grinch rejected as a (green fluffy) child no lives up the mountain being generally bitter and spiteful about the nice Christmas lovin' snub-nosed folk who live down below. Deciding to "steal" the festival from them this plans are foiled by the cute as a button Cindy Lou Who (most of the characters seem to be related which might explain their inbred appearance) drags him into town to revel in a bit of seasonal spirit. The trouble with transforming a slim picture book into an 100 minute movie is obvious. There's simply not enough story to go around. As such the film feels padded out with extraneous details (such as The Grinch's motivation I jest not) and sight gags. Originally filmed as a 22 minute cartoon (narrated by Boris Karloff) the film's major assets are Jim Carrey and Rick Baker's astonishing makeup. The film is at it's best when it's a Carrey one man show and while the set design is quite impressive elsewhere it feels a little overdone more like Batman & Robin than Batman say. The sheer Christmassy overkill of the film might prove a little cloying for some (there's a sort of half hearted dig at the commercialism of Christmas in there somewhere though) full of Santa suits fairy lights and glitter also some adults hoping for the next Jim Carrey comedy might find it a little childish but then that shouldn't be a surprise at all. A good looking fairy tale well worth catching for the makeup alone. ...

WHSmith (WHS) is one of the UK's leading retail groups incorporating market leading companies in retail, publishing and news distribution. The Group has 1,464 stores world-wide, 30,747 employees in 12 countries and sales of some £2.9bn.

WHSmith - At a Glance

WHSmith is the UK's number one family retailer selling a range of products that extends across education, entertainment and information. Each year WHSmith High Street stores sell enough pens to circle the earth; enough books to fill a library shelf from London to Edinburgh; and enough paper to write a letter to everyone in the world. WH Smith also sell 122 million magazines and newspapers each year - enough to make a pile 69 times taller than Mount Everest.

The first High Street store was a small news vendor opened in 1792 in Little Grosvenor Street, London, by Henry Walton Smith and his wife Anna. Today, WHSmith has 545 High Street stores, covering over 3 million square feet of selling space and employing 17,000 staff. Clubcard, the Company's loyalty scheme, has more than 5 million members.

Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery form the core of the High Street business. WHSmith sell more books than any other retailer in England, Scotland and Wales. For example, one in three copies of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire were bought from WHSmith in the first weekend of release. WHSmith promote new authors with their Fresh Talent showcase and also have the Thumping Good Read Award that is voted for by members of Clubcard.

WHSmith's major stores stock more than 45,000 product lines, whereas an average food supermarket carries around 10,000 lines.

WHSmith currently holds a strong market share in each of the core categories in which it trades - books, stationery, news, magazines and entertainment. WH Smith's strategy is to exploit the strength, power and potential of the WHSmith brand to provide the very best service and value for money for their customers, shareholders and wider community.
