Death's Acre: Inside the Legendary 'Body Farm' Foreword by Patricia Cornwell On a wooded hillside in Tennessee blowflies bacteria and buzzards feast on human flesh unhindered by coffins or mausoleums. They are serving the needs of science in the cause of justice. After the Hole-In-The-Wall gang rob one train too many they find themselves pursued by the most vigilant trackers in the West. Escaping to Bolivia they try to settle down but old habits die hard and soon the two are back on the wrong side of the law... Scripted by William Goldman Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a slick nostalgic vision of the Old West (giving way to the new) which despite the gnawing feeling that it's all to good to be true is one of the most relentlessly good natured and entertaining Westerns to have come out of Hollywood. Certainly there have been grittier - superior even - film depictions of the old West but Goldman's film (directed by Roy Ward Hill) is one of the most fun. The plot is fairly episodic following the antics of Butch and Sundance as they rob trains and/or banks flee from trackers jump off that cliff ride that bicycle and go down in that hail of gunfire (after being frozen for posterity in that sepia still). The performances from Newman and Redford (as well as Katherine Ross as Sundance's put upon lover) are excellent and their chemistry is evident throughout. One of the original taglines for the film allegedly read "Not that it matters but most of it is true" which sums it up perfectly. Maybe Baby - (DVD) Ben Elton's directorial debut based on his novel Inconceivable. A writer (Hugh Laurie) and his wife (Joely Richardson) are trying - but repeatedly failing - to have a baby. As they try increasingly outlandish ways to conceive the writer tries to get his career on track with the aid of his wife's diary... Ben Elton is a very busy chap. Responsible for the likes of Blackadder The Young Ones and a string of (oddly ecologically minded) comic novels. He's written plays performed endless stand up routines and now finally got round to directing his first film (which he also wrote. Of course. Based on his own novel. Of course. Semi-autobiographical. Of Course.) Hugh Laurie stars as Sam Bell a television writer for a painfully unfunny looking television show. Juggling the needs of the BBC's new management with the more carnal needs of his wife Lucy with whom he is sincerely trying to go forth and multiply. Unfortunately he seems to be blocked in both cases. Writer's block for the beeb and something more serious for his wife given that neither seems able to conceive no matter how hard they try (and you do have to give them brownie points for trying). The film darkens as it progresses with Sam resorting to plundering his wife's diary for screenplay inspiration and Lucy getting understandably upset before letting herself fall for handsome actor Carl (James Purefoy). There's also a strong supporting cast including Adrian Lester Joanna Lumley and Rowan Attkinson along with blink-and-you'll-miss-them appearances from Emma Thompson and Dawn French. Tom Hollander is quite amusing as a pretentious film director although his Scottish accent is so bad it is likely to make your ears bleed. However the film's problems lie more in Elton's script which tends to recycle gags from his stage act or TV series - most of which are a lot funnier with Elton's own intonation. Also once Sam has done his dirty deed (diary reading that is) it's hard not to side with the Lucy character lending something of an imbalance to the proceedings. However problems aside Maybe Baby has considerate charm and Laurie and Richardson make an engaging couple. DVD Version ...
