CHICKEN RUN (DVD) - (WS) DVD version of Nick Park and Peter Lord's claymation classic. A group of chickens struggle to escape from the prison-like confines of Tweedy's Farm. Will the newly arived American "Flying" Rooster be able to help? An escape is being planned from Hut 17 a few good ladies led by the ever resourceful Ginger are planning to make their latest escape. Perhaps the recently arrived American airman might help them get out of there? Before they get made into chicken pies? Bearing all the trappings of a prisoner of war movie Chicken Run is actually the feature film debut of the Oscar winning Aardman productions who spawned Wallace and Gromit. It clocks in at just over eighty minutes and proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that Nick Park and Peter Lord are both more than capable of sustaining the plastecine fun for more than half an hour. The plot is simple enough in tyrannical poultry farm in Northern England the chickens are getting restless with profits dropping the evil Mrs Tweedy has concocted a terrifying new way to make her produce pay. However serial escapee Ginger (voiced by Julia Swahala) has other ideas and is determined to rally the other chickens to escape. Unfortunately they’re all chickens and are thus thick as two short planks and thanks to them her increasingly ingenious escape attempts are continually foiled. Enter American circus bird Rocky The Rooster (Mel Gibson seriously) who Ginger believes can help them out. You can count the number of good British full-length animations on the fingers of one hand and so while Chicken Run was certainly financed by Spielberg’s very American Dreamworks company the film remains quintessentially English inhabiting the same amusingly twee world as Wallace and his faithful hound. Vocal talent includes Miranda Richardson (as the baddie – of course) Jane Horrocks Phil Daniels and Imelda Staunton and the film is peppered with ingenious contraption comedy (the chicken pie machine has to be seen to be believed). The jokes should appeal to an adult audience while the breathless adventure should hook the kids however the film’s major asset is its charm most of which exudes from the central characterisations. Ginger in particular is perhaps one of the best heroines that the screen has seen for some time to throw in a needless oxymoron she’s one heroic chicken and considering all the terrible puns that could have been used in this review that’s no mean feat. DVD Version Widescreen: 1.85:1 Anamorphic Stereo: Dolby Digital 5.1 (English) DTS Subtitles: English For The Hearing Impaired Special Features Three Trailers (Teaser Theatrical and Chicken Impossible) 'Fowl Play' The Making of Chicken Run 20 Minute Interview With Peter Lord And Nick Park Directors' Commentary Aardman Archive Clips Chicken Run Game Trailer ...
