Returning to the theme of contemporary Satanism over thirty years since Rosemary's Baby proved to be perhaps the definitive film on the subject Roman Polanski's variation of Arturo Perez-Reverte's novel is an enjoyably atmospheric affair. A dealer of rare books Dean Corso (Jonny Depp) is employed by a shady client (Frank Langella) to authenticate his copy of 'The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows' against the only other copies in existence - two books currently located somewhere in Europe. The book said to have been written in collaboration with the Devil himself seems to be the key for something dastardly and Corso realises that he's not the only person in pursuit of the surviving copies. Endearingly bookish The Ninth Gate is at its best as we follow Corso's investigations revelling as it does in the dusty atmosphere and jargon that goes with the trade. Unfortunately the film tails off near the end leading to a conclusion which is either tantalizingly elusive or downright incomprehensible. Still the journey there is well worth it. Depp is excellent and convincing as Corso although Langella pretty much steals every scene he's in. Lena Olin and Emmanuelle Seigner provide attractive support and Polanski demonstrates in scene after scene that he is in no danger whatsoever of losing his touch. ... Imaginative original and the very embodiment of Cult TV. There has never been anything to touch The Prisoner either before it's original broadcast in 1967 or since. Conceived in part by McGoohan himself the story of an Orwellian regime being operated in contemporary times is an intriguing one in itself. That it is set in the peculiar village of Portmeirion in Northern Wales in which the concept of scale seems to have passed it's architect by and that it oozes at the seams with ingenious ideas and disturbing imagery. Although only seventeen episodes were made they remain exceptionally varied. Ranging from psychological horror to science fiction to comedy. One episode even resembled a western. The ambiguous nature of the series has piqued the interest of many. Theses have been written on the nuances and subtleties of the series each installment was full of intriguing ideas philosophical references and visual clues despite the fact that McGoohan has later asked anyone who understood what was going on to kindly explain it to him. Arriving for the first time on DVD it's good to see that the series has aged particularly well - the special effects were always subtle (even "Rover" the giant balloon sent to round up escapees) and still work today. The DVD versions are - of course - digitally restored and include extra footage trailers and a documentary as you would expect from a high quality DVD release.
